Look at your people!

There are always go to people, this is true of any organisation I’ve ever worked with. The size of the organisation did not seem to change this, there was always a key person. There were few cases in my working life where they left and caused a major issue, but the loss of knowledge and experience quite often had an impact.

An example of how bad it can be!

This is an example of just how easy it is to manufacture a business crisis without any significant effort, the example from “Bored Panda” shows how quickly things can go completely pear shaped. I’m not expressing an opinion on the wrights or wrongs of the incident, I certainly don’t want to seem to be taking sides.

But what we have here is an example of how easy it is for things to go wrong, along with a perfect example of the type of thing that should be in a Business Continuity Plan or at the very least in the Risk Register. The link below will take you to the post on Bored Panda, draw your own conclusions about the ethics of the parties involved.

What I will say is that I have seen this key person many times, in many different and varied companies. These companies ranged from just a couple of dozen employees, but some had employee counts in the thousands. Although the larger companies did have better knowledge sharing and documentation, there was still sufficient concern to request that these key people were identified as a risk on the risk register.

Without a comprehensive understanding of what these people do it is extremely difficult to negate the impact that their unavailability is going to cause.
